Director
Dr Buchanan is a Specialist Anaesthetist and Pain Medicine Physician whose clinical work centres on the diagnosis and treatment of complex chronic pain, with a particular interest in interventional techniques for spine pain and nerve pain. He brings these skills to bear within the classic biopsychosocial framework — combining diagnostic assessment, lifestyle optimisation, physical and cognitive treatments, interventional procedures and pharmacotherapy — applied in an evidence-informed way to best serve his patients. He studied medicine at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1990, and trained in anaesthesia through the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital programme in Sydney, becoming a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2000. After many years of anaesthetic practice across the public and private systems in Canberra, he trained in pain medicine through Nepean Hospital in Sydney and Painmatrix in Geelong. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA, in 2016, and gained his Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice from the World Institute of Pain in 2019. He is an instructor for the International Pain & Spine Intervention Society and has endorsement in procedural pain medicine from the Faculty of Pain Medicine.Dr Buchanan now practises pain medicine full-time in Melbourne. He continues to serve in supervision, training and professional society roles: he is currently chair of the Victorian Regional Committee of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, a committee member of the Australian section of the World Institute of Pain, and a member of the Economics Advisory Committee of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. His practice also includes a medico-legal component through the Melbourne Pain Group. His main professional interest is a curiosity about the complexity of pain homeostasis and how best to serve his patients and community. Outside medicine, his interests include family, alpine pursuits, cycling, and a sense of wonder regarding life. He is grateful to his teachers and mentors, and enjoys sharing his experience and observations.
